Study abroad to have better chances of finding a job

Erasmus Developing Money Ideas

Credit: Erasmus Exchange Programme

So many times considered and participated in a discussion of whether it is worth to study abroad on Erasmus program, but every single time it was on a theoretical opinion level. Recently published The Erasmus Impact Study reveals some measurable quantitative and qualitative figures. Lets discuss them.

“Former Erasmus students are half as likely to experience long term unemployment compared to those that do not go abroad. The unemployment rate of Erasmus students five years after graduation is 23% lower.” Given the results are well measured, this is a very significant outcome. This makes sense when we look at another outcome: “64% of employers think international experience is important for recruitment (a change from 37% in 2006)”. Even though international experience criteria probably does not play that important role in practice, the tendency is undeniable – international study experience is seen as more valuable and in fact enhances chances of finding a job.

“On average 92% of employers are looking for transversal skills such as openness to and curiosity about new challenges, problem-solving and decision-making skills, confidence, tolerance towards other personal values and behaviours. Based on Erasmus students personality traits, they have better a better predisposition for employability even before going abroad. By the time they return they have increased their advantage by 42% on average. While 81% of Erasmus students perceive an improvement in their transversal skills when they come back, 52% show higher memo© factors. In all cases, they consider the improvement of skills to be greater than they expected before going abroad.” This conclusion is another confirmation of benefits studying abroad.

“40% Erasmus students have changed their country of residence or work at least once since graduation, almost double the number of those who were not mobile during studies. While 93% of students with international experience can imagine living abroad in the future, this is the case for only 73% of those who stay in the same country during their studies. 33% of former Erasmus students have a partner of a different nationality, compared with 13% of those who stay home during their studies; 27% of Erasmus students meet their long-term partner while on Erasmus”. These findings clearly illustrate how multidimensional the study experience abroad is. This is why European Commission seeks to increase the number of Erasmus students from 5% to 20% by 2020.

Unfortunately, i am among the 5%, who have not used the Erasmus student exchange possibility. Even though I applied to the program twice (in both bachelor and master degree’s), both times i was rejected due to a surprising reason – the lack of motivation! My grades were good enough and sometimes on the top of the class, but somehow the motivation letter was never graded well. Not sure how i could not be not motivated, if study abroad was my dream, which subsequently turned into the decision to leave the country for a full study abroad. The selection system in Economics Faculty at Vilnius University was clearly not well balanced and needs to be improved, but lets leave this and other undercurrents and instead – focus on positive movements. I went to study to Copenhagen Business School and from there i participated in the international student exchange program in Shanghai, China.

I was always convinced that studying abroad in Erasmus program is beneficial and had to convince / support several friends to use the possibility. The ones who are opposed in the beginning tend to change their opinion after the experience and even though some people might be unhappy and disappointed, i believe that experience was still valuable.

Get Inspired but Not Addicted by Music

Do you sometimes feel a very strong inspirational flow coming inwards and a feeling you have more powers and energy than regular? Almost like an ignition of the motor. Bursting feeling to perhaps change the situation you are in at the moment, desire to go much further, realization that the possibilities are open and you have to accomplish so many things yet? It comes in different sizes and shapes, depending on where you are and what the situation is, but one thing is common –  desire to function and act on something in full extent or even above 100%. Lets describe one of the most often sources of inspiration – music inspiration.

It might be that not all written above suits you and i am sure music is very individual to everyone. Whatever is the form you are lifted, how and why is this possible? More interestingly, why not always is possible to repeat it? It would be great to come to the same music track and get what you want – unfortunately, it might not be as strong anymore or have no effect at all.

French chemist and inventor of the pasteurization process Louis Pasteur said “the fortune favours the prepared mind”. This phrase fits in many fields and offers one possible explanation, why music influences us at specific times. The luck by definition comes by accident, but (1) if you are working or thinking intensively on certain field, you increase your chances for luck to come, (2) even if the luck comes, only the prepared mind can see and utilize the benefits of what luck brings to you.

Is it really specific music bringing this effect or you are just in need to experience the internal inspiration and (1) different music might fulfill the role or (2) silence can do the same and (3) different art / relaxation forms do equally well? Naturally one music is better than others and some music fits to one moment and other fits better to another moment. Music has an amazing attribute to synchronize with your mental level and boost the mood, but for sure, silence could inspire as well. Once you keep being longer without music and only in silence, your body adjusts and gets excited to various other signals, even thoughts. To get a little further on this topic, i will share my personal experience. I love music, but at some point, when i wrote master thesis, i completely abandoned music for almost 2 years and even little sound was affecting negatively. The worst thing was that my girlfriend insisted that music must always be on and if i want silence, i have to put the headphones or leave the room. From when did the music get such an importance? From when did the silence got kicked out as natural state of being? We had a very strange debate, where i argumented that silence is fundamental and the music is an extra layer, which you can customize by placing headphones (also because there are so many music styles) and not the opposite. This illustrated that music could get promoted too strongly over silence, people could become and are addicted to the music. Once i had no music and studied and wrote in silence, i could better focus and not be disturbed by various other inspirations. Music could serve as and inspiration, but it could be inspiring for things that are off your wishes. Also, there are so many other relaxation and artistic forms to get inspired, so, as with many things, lets not not focus too much on one form.

In one of my most inspiring TED talks, conductor Benjamin Zander shows how and why classical music inspires us. He depicts well how music can inspire us and be important emotional element in our lives. I agree with him in many ways, but would like to add that (1) there is a difference between active engagement (for instance learning music) and only listening, (2) conductor is positive, but still biased with classical genre, while there are many other forms that could inspire similarly positive.

Finally, listening to favourite music might result in a release of dopamine, that is also responsible for pleasure reactions caused by food, drugs or making love. “Dopamine is important because it makes us want to repeat behaviors. It’s the reason why addictions exist, whether positive or negative. In this case, the euphoric ‘highs’ from music are neurochemically reinforced by our brain so we keep coming back to them. Dopamine is not really a ‘feel good’ chemical. Instead, it’s the ‘please do this again’ chemical. So that’s why it’s involved in addiction. Our brain is telling us to keep doing this again, and we do, which is why music has been around forever” scientists says.

There is no clear conclusion of this discussion. It is an open inquiry into how music influences us. For one, we need inspiration and music is one of the best sources. For second, we can get this inspiration from silence, natural sounds and other forms, especially arts. Third, music is addictive and like with many addictions – it is not good to depend on something too much. Some addictions, such as alcoholism are negative. Fourth, there is a difference in passive and active listening – are we listening to music at home, live or play ourselves?

This writing is influenced (and written while listening) by music. I love music and wanted to understand the structure of this influence. Music usually just automatically switches to go mode, but this time wanted to uncover what is behind the drive.

Start Being Sustainable On a Personal Small Level

Last time tried to ignite the discussion of what is the sustainable development – where it starts and ends (or does not end)? This time, want to go deeper on the personal level, discussing how much can we be sustainable on a small scale, you and me, today and now. The question of personal sustainable development is getting more attention, but what are the concrete actions to be made to lift up (actually not to lift, but rather to maintain and seek that it will be continuous) the sustainability.

First what comes to my mind (what do you think?) thinking about sustainability is the environment or ECOLOGY – relationship between human and nature. Here we could raise and try answering these personal questions:

  • To what extent do i use the renewable energy? It is well known that gas, oil and coal is a limited resource, while sun and wind are limitless. So why not to use the unlimited resources in your daily needs? The problem of course is the cost, the difficulties to change the supplier, the bureaucracies, etc. However, lets have that as an aim and track our progress and potentially encourage or vote for the initiatives that bring us renewable energy home. My personal example – i installed the solar panels on the boat and now all the electric supply comes from sun. Furthermore, it is (a) cost efficient (invested money only on the solar panels, while operating costs – sun is free and solar panels should serve for 25 years according to guarantee), (b) time saving (i do not need anymore to fill the diesel or turn the engine on) and environment saving not only from (c) resource perspective, but also from (d) lower pollution, (e) lower noise (no need to run the engine), which leads to a more qualitative quiet time. Personal evaluation: electricity +, gas -, diesel -.
  • To what extent do i sort out the garbage? It would make life more sustainable, if the things we do not need be recycled. The better we recycle at home, the easier it is for the companies to sort out and reuse the things. Personal evaluation: even though my house friend pushed me to sort out the garbage straight from the beginning, we stopped doing it due to low space on the boat availability. This is of course not an excuse and we could (and should and will) think of some creative solution, how to address the issue.
  • To what extent do we throw out the food we buy? According to the statistics, 6 out of 10 UK families fail to finish all the foods on the plates and throws out 6.5kg of unwanted food each week. UK households throw away 7 million tones of food and drinks per year and more than half of it could have been eaten. Wasting this food costs £700 per year for a family with children. There are two main reasons why we throw away good food: we cook or prepare too much or we don’t use it in time. Personal evaluation: i am very conscious and try never to through away the food, but sometimes the food goes out due to fungus (keeping too long). Potential action for myself – better planning. I also often buy the food that is on sale the last day, so i have two effects here: help saving the food from throwing out and as well saving money.
  • To what extent do we clean our room, the stairs, the corridor, the yard, the neighborhood, the parks, the city? Do we collect the garbage when we pass by accident or we do cleaning only on the times designed for that – like a cleaning day of the year? I always love to notice how perfectly works the following psychological effect – if the park is full of garbage, it is so easy to join the littering and feel no responsibility, since other people do that as well, and my garbage is just one of thousands, while if there is no garbage in the park – we suddenly start feeling the responsibility and discomfort, when the garbage stands out. Once the environment (whether it is your room or park nearby) is clean and cleared, there is space for something new to happen, for creativity and nice time to emerge, for somebody else to play. Personal evaluation – I do clean my home and never throw the garbage, but only recently started to participate in the voluntarily activities to clean the canal and think about the cleanness around. Cleaning spaces opens up the spaces and new possibilities that we could not think of.
  • To what extent do you use sustainable transportation – walking, bike, electric scooter, motorbike, public transportation, a car or a plane? As i wrote in the previous blog post, cycling has a tremendous effect on your finances, environment, health, flexibility, speed, sightseeing and geographical orientation. The more we walk, use the manual or renewable power driven vehicles, sharing schemes, the more sustainable we are. Personal evaluation – i ride bike everywhere within 1 hour ride one way and whatever weather conditions are, use public transportation otherwise or try to hitchhike (if possible) and share the car for long distances.
  • To what extent do we use the printing services or we just have an electronic version in your phone or computer?
  • To what extent do we use the libraries to read the book or newspaper or do we have to have always our own copy?

As we leave the ecology field, personal sustainability becomes blurry, with unsure borders where it starts and ends. Lets think of another category ECONOMY. An old saying suggests us “take care of yourself first or you will have nothing left to give others”. Certainly this saying is not fully true, since there is always something to give to others. However, there is quite a bit of truth as well – we do need self-care in order to be better equipped to help others. As K.McBridge says: “self-care is about seeking and nurturing internal validation. It is finding the child within and giving him or her soothing comfort, reassurance, and warm, loving thoughts and wishes. It is about taking care of the internal emotional side of our being and learning self-compassion”. Being self sustainable financially enables us to satisfy personal essential needs, helps to reach self actualization (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs), family needs and then help others. Living without external funding and financial support gives us financial independence, freedom and wisdom.

  • Can we live only from your past earnings without an additional job? Once your income from assets becomes higher than periodic expenses, you are fully sustainable to live without a job.
  • Is our net worth (assets minus liabilities) positive? As i wrote in the previous blog, it is highly important to increase your net worth in order to be less dependent on external influence.
  • Have we Increased and maximized our income? It looks a bit out of sustainable development scope at first glance, but it is not! Being productive and active gives benefits to yourself and the society. Searching for the ways how to become more efficient makes your home, your workplace, your community more efficient and thus better place to work and live. We should not think of maximizing income as stepping over other fields, such as environment, culture, or society. Maximization needs to be considered, adjusted and integrated with other factors. Having considered other elements, it is still very important to maximize income. Maximization also pushes as to do what we like, because we can do a better job at the things we enjoy more. Also, maximization pushes us to think of not only the regular job income source, but also about investments, entrepreneurship, that could add significantly higher income source at the same time benefiting many other fields and increasing sustainability.
  • Have we decreased and minimized our expenses? When i mention self-care, it is not about buying a new tv set or a car to satisfy your luxury needs. All these toys or the things that are not essential can lead to lower savings, more debt, more dependance and lower sustainability. Minimizing expenses enables us to save and invest, distribute our wealth over time and better resist to crisis. Spending less brings inner and outer sustainability – learning how to be satisfied with minimal expenses can enhance creativity and appreciation of non-material things. By consuming less we naturally discourage producing new things and wasting resources.
  • Enhancing the quality of our assets. Why to buy the apartment for only yourself, if you can buy an apartment and share (sub-rent) with other people ? You will win by gaining additional income and at the same time allocating more efficiently the resources. Why to buy the apartment in general, if you can rent cheaper (maybe there are already many apartments built and available to rent) and invest the savings somewhere else? Should you buy a car or drive public transportation or buy a bike? All these questions should be raised managing your assets. The best assets are those that generate some income (for instance investment in stocks or bonds brings dividends and capital returns) and the worst are those that are just increasing your debt (all luxury items and especially real estate only for yourself to satisfy the comfort). Diversification or investing in different kinds of assets (real estate, stock market, businesses) is one tool to enhance the quality.
  • Optimize the liabilities. Get rid of all the debts that you pay high interest and you will live more sustainably. Otherwise – you work hard just to pay the high interest.
  • To what extent do we reuse the things? Clothes, shoes, towels?
  • How long do we wear or use the things – updating your clothes with every fashion coming in and throwing clothes with every tiny spot or sign of wear or hole? Buying new phone every single opportunity arises? There is no hidden irony here – sustainability should not be something painful or the things we do not want. Sustainability should be adding but not taking away. If being up to date with the latest technology is more pleasant than using the same model for 4 years, let it be so. It is less sustainable, but we should always balance, weight pluses and minuses and not go to the extremes.
  • How often do you buy the things you do not need?
  • How often do you give presents that are bought and hand made or already used?

Another field is the HEALTH. Can we be really sustainable if we are sick and pass the viruses to others or need so much care from others that we almost take someone’s else life time? By taking care of our health (mental and physical), we are able to be more productive, happier and help others, making a world more sustainable.

  • Do we do eye exercises and little breaks between our work or other activities?
  • How often do we do sports?
  • Do we eat enough vegetables or are we perhaps vegetarian or pescetarian? Eating more vegetables and less meat leads not only to personal health, but also saving the animals, discouraging unhealthy mass meat production.
  • Do we limit sweets and sugar intakes? It is perhaps a very happy moment to eat cookie, but eating too much in the long run causes many problems.
  • Do we sleep enough and recover our mental and physical condition? We are definitely more sustainable when we are fresh and more happy.
  • Do we and to what extent we smoke and drink alcohol?

There are also SOCIAL, POLITICAL and CULTURAL sustainability factors. These we might discuss later and you are all welcome to suggest your factors or in general understanding how we could be more sustainable. To wrap the whole discussion, lets touch another field. Recently my understanding was extended by a biodynamic agriculture concept that was initiated by Rudolph Steiner. Biodynamics is as someone described “organics plus” – farming, processes and resulting products are not only organic, but also treated interrelated with the whole ecosystem and even spirituality. Soil fertility mutually interacts with plant growth, livestock and spiritual dimension.  Even though i can not agree and quantify with connection with the spiritual dimension, the idea of interconnection is very plausible. The same goes with any sustainable development, including personal (and urban) – there are multiple dimensions that are simultaneously influencing each other and even though one action might seem unrelated, there is still connectivity taking a look deeper and into more details.

Lets Reach Sustainable Development Inside Us and Around Us

Sustainable Development Developing Money IdeasHow often do you find yourself working on a certain goal or activity, forgetting anything (or much) that exists besides? I personally do feel that very often – playing basketball, reading an interesting book, watching amazing movie, working on exciting task, meeting with best friends, etc. Ability to maintain focus is undoubtedly super important, but forgetting to rotate your focus on different fields is not less important! Full and long term happiness or success does not come simply by reaching one aim in one area, we need to reach sustainable development that denotes balancing among several dimensions in time. Lets see what is the sustainable development?

I have recently participated in the ASHA centre project to discuss the sustainable development. Here one of the guest lecturers noted that Sustainable Development should probably be considered not through a Classical sustainability model (see the 1st model in the figure), where Environment, Society and Economy are separated into three separate pillars and the intersection (where all the three pillars are considered and reflected) is Sustainable Development. He proposed an idea to use Embedded Sustainability model (see the 2nd model in the figure), where Environment is the fundamental core of all and Society could not exist without Environment and Economy is part of the social interactions. It makes sense to look to the environment as a fundamental background of all happenings and economic decisions influenced by social inter-connectivity (economics is a social science!), but i still liked the idea of the first model to divide the matters (since humans tend to treat themselves separate and make decisions irrespectively of what nature tells) and reconnect (finding the middle point) them when considering all sort of projects. I started to search for a better model, that could perhaps depict the whole sustainability concept in a better way and found Circles (i like to add Levels) of Social Sustainability model (see the 3rd model in the figure) by Paul James.

In Circles/Levels Social Sustainability model we take a different angle – from human perspective or social perspective! Sustainability could be reached considering four categories – Economic, Ecologic, Cultural and Political. Contrary to the other models, there is no more the “environment” factor, that seems to be unmovable. Instead, we see the Ecological perspective that we need to address in order to be sustainable. There is also no separate “social” factor, since developments that affect us (and we affect), humans, are of concern, and not what is out of our control. In order to reach sustainable development, we need also cultural and political consideration, which seems to be natural assumption. Within every 4 factors we have to address 7 sub-domains and evaluate the level (circle) reached. The better sub-domain is valued, the higher is the score and the more sustainable development is present. A good example is Sao Paulo evaluation.  SaoPaulo Developing Money Ideas

The model enables to evaluate large scale development, such as cities, but as well gives directions for personal sustainable development. Every one of us should consider not only how much money we earn, but what ecological impact we make, how we preserve identity and what kind of movements we encourage. Only considering and caring what happens around us we can reach full and long term happiness and success.

Focus On Increasing Your Net Worth

Net Worth by Developing Money Ideas

One of the three elephant concepts in this blog and essential element of the personal finance (or any other finance) is to increase your Net Worth. Lets straight jump to what is the net worth, describing it in the following equation:

Net Worth = Assets – Liabilities

Essentially, increasing your assets and decreasing your liabilities, makes you richer. Assets are all the things you accumulate throughout the life and have at the moment: cash, household good (furniture, electronics), vehicles (cars, bikes), real estate, investments, retirement funds, receivables (someone borrowed money from you or owes you a rent), insurances, businesses, etc. Liabilities on the other end are loans (mortgage, student loans), credit cards (if you are in minus on your card), taxes owed (if you have to pay for your real estate or being self employed) and other payable (unpaid bills, child support).

The equation is quite simple, but to increase your net worth is not that easy. For instance, if you buy a car (increase one element of assets) by spending your cash or take a loan with the same amount, your net worth stays the same! If you try to decrease the liabilities by paying back the student loan with cash or taking another loan, your net worth stays again intact! The magic question is thus, how to increase the assets by not increasing (or increasing less) liabilities or how to decrease liabilities by not lowering (or lowering less) assets. We can answer the question by expanding the equation with the time concept and new elements, the Income and Expenses:

Net Worth of today = Assets of yesterday + Income earned since yesterday – Liabilities of yesterday – Expenses incurred since yesterday

Now it starts to become clear that if your period income is higher than the expenses, all the surplus goes in to Assets and thus results in higher Net Worth! In the opposite scenario (if your expenses are higher than income), the liabilities raise faster than assets and your net worth decreases. Liabilities and Assets also appreciate or depreciate in time. Income is your salary, dividends from business, increases in the value of investments, rent payments, interest payments to you. While the income list tends to be short (better to enlarge!), expense list is often very long (counting 15 categories for myself): rent payments, food, entertainment, transportation, investment expenses, it, clothes, communication, presents, household, alcohol, health, sports, education, business.

Now we can formulate several ways to increase your net worth: (1) Increase income in all possible ways and to the maximum potential, (2) Decrease the expenses, (3) Enhance the quality of your assets, so that assets would generate income or appreciate in value, (4) Optimize your liabilities, so that to pay as little interest as possible and borrow only for income generating purposes.

Just before analyzing each way into more detail, it is important to emphasize that it is often not enough to just have a feeling of your net worth, it is (5) important to calculate and track your net worth in time. Only by writing the number down could change your imaginable net worth and actions substantially. More importantly, tracking several months could give you a perspective what can happen in the future, given the present tendency, thus what potential problems you need to solve right now, before it is too late. Tracking your net worth is inevitable for setting efficiently your financial (and even non-financial) goals and making financial decisions to apply for loans, particularly mortgage.

The necessity and importance to calculate the personal net worth could be seen from the corporate world, where companies not only see clear benefits from knowing financial status, but also are required by law to provide their balance, profit and loss accounts, and calculate shareholder’s equity (or net worth).

Avoid The Lemming Effect and Preserve Money, Self Identity and Personal Development

Lemming effect

We don’t even realize how often our decisions are based on other people’s moves. Lemming effect depicts a negative side of (un)conscious following of the crowd – when following leads to falling off the cliff. In real life situations it could mean losses of money, self identity and slower personal development. Lemming effect also takes place when social pressure influences your alcohol consumption (my article that inspired this writing). Lets discuss in more details this effect.

Lemmings are little rodents (animal class that includes rats, mice, squirrels, hamsters) that live in the cold northern (near Arctic) regions, but do not sleep through the harsh northern winter. They remain active, finding food by digging through the snow and storing in advance. They are singular animals by nature, meeting only to mate and then going their separate ways, but like all rodents, they have a high reproductive rate and can breed rapidly when food is plentiful. When population density becomes too high, some of the lemming species migrate in large quantities and since they can swim, they choose to cross the water in search of a new habitat. Here comes the hyperbolic misconception (myth) of mass suicide phenomena, called the Lemming Effect.

The Lemming Effect is a behaviour when people unquestionably follow popular opinion or behaviour and that potentially results with negative consequences. As it might sound easy to grasp the concept, it is difficult to notice in your actual behaviour. Moreover, social togetherness is sometimes very pleasant and sweet, as in this short video, where one man starts to dance, then few people join and once the critical 5-6 people threshold is passed, massive amounts of people join the dance. Would you join? I am sure i could not resist. It is a pleasant example, while lemming effect brings awareness that mass behaviour does not always result in positive experience.

Lets take the stock market dot-com bubble explosion in 1999-2001 and a recent real estate fiasco (subprime mortgage crisis) in 2007-2009, which also caused stock market crash. Many investors were too emotional, irrational and instead of conducting the research themselves, followed the commonly accepted level of valuation. Believing that market is always efficient and it sets the prices correctly in short periods results in lazy approach of following what others do. To tell the truth, i was not an exception in the stock market crash in 2008. The only difference was that i invested after a very in-depth research, seemingly abstract from emotion, since positions were illiquid undervalues positions. My mistake however was to use high financial leverage (taking large debts and investing in stocks) strategy (desire to get rich quicker!), which meant that when the lemmings drops, even the undervalued positions become more undervalued and the leverage pushed me to sell them at unacceptable levels. Personal take away from this situation – you can not even stand on the same path and thing that you could be intact when lemmings move to either side, because you will be stepped over.

From personal development perspective, following masses could mean loosing your individuality, feeling uncomfortable and struggling being internally happy. For instance, if the most popular education program in universities is business studies and you choose business ignoring your true desires (just because you have the best grades and here you find the highest competition) or failing to do sufficient research of what studies would fit you the best or where there is a lack of experts, your choice could result quitting your studies or worst, finishing the studies and then working somewhere in different field.

In conclusion, (1) lemming effect is not that far from addictive and pleasant social togetherness, but with some potential negative effect that you need to be aware at all times. (2) It would be wise to participate in social movements, but not to loose your head in the emotions, be critical and abstract from the movements that are going against your vision. (3) Also do the research, experiment with unpopular ideas, before deciding that massive movement is for you. (4) It is important not to ignore the fashionable movements, because accidentally standing on the way of the movement could harm you. On the other angle, you could have a very good use of lemming effect, if played well (contrarian view).

Get Rid of Alcohol Dependence and Boost Your Self Development

Alcohol consumption influences self development

Have you felt that your position in regards to consumption of alcohol is so volatile – changing from “why not” with friends, “need more” after few drinks and “will not drink so much or not at all” in the morning next day, especially having a headache? Inspired by The Wall Street Journal graph above, I want to discuss how alcohol dependence influences self development.

Lets first analyze the qualities of alcohol. It seems that on every aspect there is a positive and equally negative side. Lets take positive (+) easier and more relaxed communication and negative (-) too loose communication, once the level passes certain level (and unfortunately, it is very difficult to control the level) and/or even the communication that you do not remember next day.

Having alcohol with your friends means (+) being in the social circle, while at the same time this imposes (-) the social pressure. Social circle of togetherness versus invisible pressure, which i liked to hyperbolize as “once you are out of the circle, you’ll never come back”.

Moderate consumption of alcohol could be (+) good for the heart and circulatory system, and probably protects against diabetes, while (-) heavy drinking could damage the liver and heart, harm an unborn child, increase the chances of developing breast and some other cancers, contribute to depression and violence, and interfere with relationships.

The controversy is reflected in varying recommendations of what the level of alcohol is safe. While in Netherlands suggestion is not to exceed 20g of pure ethanol per day for men and 10g for women, Italy on the same matter is much more flexible – 40g per day for men (about 450 ml or 3 glasses of wine for men and 2 glasses of wine for women).

To conclude, many researches and people (including myself) suggest that a moderate consumption is not bad or even good for you, since you take in the positive things and leave out the negatives. This sounds very appealing and natural, right, but can you consume alcohol moderately in practice? It is often you can not.

Here comes discussion, how alcohol consumption influences self development. Since we tend to consume alcohol above “moderately”, we inflict our self development rather than enhance. To start with, how could you grow personally, if you do something because of the social pressure? My personal experience is not better – i could not (and sometimes still can not) resist to beers with friends, even if i don’t like the taste of the beer! Unfortunately, the taste of the beer becomes less relevant with every new glass, thus moderate grows to excessive. Yes, it is fun. Yes, it is relaxing and i could do more crazy things, but what kind of fake development is that? Why can I not do the same things without alcohol, why do i need an artificial stimulation? Lets address the development clash with alcohol in the following segments:

(1) Social pressure – would it be more developing your character to accept social pressure or learn to resist to the things you do not naturally (without external influence) like and keep your thoughts and action intact despite temporary distractions? No Lemming Effect (will write about this later) any more! Also, your creativity blossoms thinking how to avoid social pressure, how to engage your mind and invite your friends to play something else, which tends to be more interesting than just to drink. Finally, what an improvement is to remember all the things you discussed with the friends and develop the ideas further, rather than going a bit in circles on the same topic.

(2) Taste – why not to develop your taste trying millions of other flavours, not hanging over only alcoholic content. To almost everyone first beer is not tasty, but with regular drinking it can become tasty. Alcohol tends to have a strong flavour due to ethanol’s properties, so essentially it is not the taste we are attracted to the alcohol, but other properties.

(3) Dizzy, relaxed and communicating – any development tends to be sustainable if it is natural and organic. Alcohol raises the mood artificially, which means “mountains” on consumption and “valleys” on the days without alcohol. Over time, mood and even sleep could incur permanent imbalances. So why not lift relaxation with the same pleasant activities, just without artificial stimulation?

(4) Health – better health obviously leads to many positive outcomes and developments. Even though moderate drinking can bring some positive effects, you will not be worse by exchanging it to some other healthy activities. Personally, health does not play significant role in my decision not to drink.

(5) Unconstrained bohemian creative feel (trying to select the words for a process, when alcohol lifts creative powers to try irregular things) – certainly you do try new things more bravely and develop a better understanding of outside box and especially it could be valuable in artistic world, but i believe there are more illusions than it seems to be and with time comes understanding that if it is not alcohol, the creative powers and needs to discover new areas show up anyway, since your hunger for discoveries and adventures are developed before alcohol.

Now lets come back to the picture and the core background reason that inspired this writing – my home country Lithuania ranks the 3rd on the list! Even though there could be some discrepancy with illegal alcohol consumption (we can go even up by ranks if all consumption included!), this is very like true and sad picture. To tell a personal story, my both grandfathers are extremely excessive alcoholics and thus i could be a little bit bias on this topic and subsequently keep some anger. Mostly not on my grandparents, but on Soviet Union. According to my personal opinion (unconfirmed with facts yet), soviet regime brought “vodka” culture to Lithuania and other occupied countries with likely some bad intentions. On the other hand, Russia does not cope well with alcohol consumption either.

Even though World Health Organization’s Global status report on alcohol and health 2014 shows that the greater the economic wealth of a country, the more alcohol is consumed and the smaller the number of abstainers, it is not (and can not be) healthy with excessive quantities (two top countries Belarus and Moldova are definitely far from being strong economies).

Invest in bike first, only then go for stocks and real estate

Invest in bike, Developing Money IdeasIt seems strange to compare the investment return on riding a bike with the return on buying a stock or acquiring a real estate. You are right, the comparison is strange and that makes it more effective! We often forget to talk about the investments that are so easily reachable and rush to talk about investments that are difficult to handle and obtain knowledge about. Lets start the unusual comparison and answer ourselves, whether we should invest in bike first!

According to Credit Suisse global investment returns yearbook, stock market return in United Kingdom from 1900 to 2011 equaled to an annual real rate of 5.2%.

According to historical Halifax UK house prices since 1983 to 2012, the prices adjusted for inflation have risen 101% in UK and 124% in London, meaning that annual rate of return is 2.4% for UK and 2.8% for London.

I bought my bike for £57 from ebay.co.uk on May 2012. It was a retro style 30 years second hand bike with a usage of few times, since the owner could not find time to ride more often and was using a car intensively. I then got discount of £10 due to rust marks that were not shown and noted on the ad. In fact, I came to pick up the bike late in the evening, so I did not notice the marks and only the next morning I did thorough inspection and could see that while the bike was with little millage, it had rusty spots due to probably not very good storage conditions. The seller was so kind to reimburse a little discount to paypal account.

I was moderately happy with my purchase due to the same rust marks. I was about to use the bike quite intensively and rust meant that bike parts are deemed to break faster. The purchase went from bad to moderate with a friendly reimbursement and apology gesture by the seller.

In almost two years my bike had a total additional investment of £86.58. Most of the investments were great purchases that should serve several years. One of the investments had to be replaced instantly – too short and thin bike lock (cost of £2.99) was changed by more solid, longer and better quality lock for £8.47. In the first year I also bought lights for £9, mobile holder on the steering wheel for GPS usage – £2.55 and a helmet for £26. In the second year investments were made into batteries for £1, pair of cotter pins to fix unstable pedal £2.29, multi bike tool kit for £24.99, rear brake cable £2.99 and had to replace broken (dropped from hands) front and rear light pack for £6.30.

In total the investment into transportation vehicle is worth £137.28. Lets calculate now the returns. The alternative investment is to buy a £120.6/month or £1256/year travel card adult ticket for Tube, DLR and London Overground for 1-2 zones. Other option is to buy bus and tram pass for £77.6/month or £808/year.

What is the financial return of the bike investment in terms of saving on public transportation? Lets take the cheapest transportation alternative – yearly bus travel card. In this case, already from day 2 return equals to 16.2 times the investment (formula (£808 bus travelcard – £47 initial investment) / £47 initial investment). Later throughout the year I had to spend additional £49 for extra parts, thus, the return decreased to 15.1 time. After the year 1 I would need to purchase another bus travelcard, so my return immediately doubles to 32.3 times. Again it drops to 31.5 after the extra purchases. In order to calculate the overall return, I need to make two assumptions: bike life expectancy and average extra costs per year for the future years to come. For the one, I make assumption that my bike will have a life of 4 years, since I use it very intensively. For the two, assumption of £49 yearly expenses seems to be reasonable given last two years. Finally, after 4 years expected savings could equal £3000, which is 63 times the initial investment!

And that is not all. Financial return is not the only return that you get by riding the bike. To begin with, you do so much sport, which translates into health. Cycling one hour at the speed of around 13 mph for a 80 kg person means burning 560 calories. In comparison, walking from a house to a car or bus for 1h burns 120 calories. However, it would take 15 to 30 min to walk to the bus stop, so we need to compare with only 60 calories, which is a 8.3 daily return.

Another advantage is a better geographical orientation. When I moved to London and was mostly taking undergrounds, my understanding of the city map grew quite slowly. Even taking the bus did not help to progress rapidly, since I did not know the routes. Once I started to cycle, I had to look at the map, memorize the routes and most importantly experience myself all the roads. Soon I knew very much more about the city and I did not need maps on the routes I have been before.

Riding a bike means you sightseeing everything around you while traveling. Less than walking, but definitely more than driving a car or bus, not to mention underground. Once you are interested in something on the way, no problem to stop and watch or even participate, or visit. Personally, I tend to stop on cultural events, flash mobs.

Footprint. Biking usually means lower pollution. You suddenly become environmentally responsible. That brings happiness inside. According to one research, bicycle emits 21 gCO2 per km traveled, while passenger car and bus respectively emits 271 and 101 gCO2 per km traveled. Emission also depends on what type of food you eat and in this article you could find that carbon footprint powered by cheeseburger is by 4 times higher than bananas :). These differences are nicely visualized in Shrink That Footprint blog – meat lover has double footprint comparing to a vegetarian person.

Flexibility. It is especially relevant at night, when public transportation runs on a much lower scale or even stops. It is such a relief to have a bike besides and be at home in half an hour from the friend or place you have just stayed longer at night. That is invaluable. Flexibility is also relevant in terms of when you have to leave and come to the place. If the bus in your area comes in half an hour, with bike you could already be in place in that time. This means I do not need to place a large time space before a meeting to make sure you are not late. There is very little volatility in arrival times, because you can avoid the traffic congestion.

Speed. It definitely depends on how fast you cycle, but even slow cycling is very similar to the trip with the bus. For one, you go out of the house and jump straight to the bike, you don’t need to go to the bus stop. If your bus or underground stop is 15 min away, you could make in this time already 3 miles at 13 miles per hour speed. Buses or underground also have to stop in the intermediary stops. Another very important aspect is traffic congestion. Since you have no traffic congestion, at least in London, you could be almost always faster than a car at daytime.

Lets discuss now the negative sides. First and main issue is safety. London and many other cities are definitely far away from having a good biking infrastructure, meaning that most often bikes need to cycle on the same roads as cars. This is the primary reason of accidents. In 2007 there were 147 thousand cyclists in Greater London, 2953 reported injuries, of which 446 resulted in serious injuries and 15 died. Another report shows that biking is more dangerous comparing to a car or walking.

It is more difficult to cycle on poor weather conditions. It is colder and more difficult to drive in windy or rainy conditions. You could also need special clothes to protect from the rain, which might be not suitable for office work, where there is no changing room.

Another disadvantage is long distances. One can sustain regular commuting of 1 or 2 hours per day, but it is quite difficult to go above this ladder.

Invest in bike first, since it brings measurable and unmeasurable, financial and non-financial value!

Intro. First Post. Welcome

Hello and welcome everyone,

Justinas Developing Money Ideas photoThis is my debut. First post. First attempt to charm and invite you to continue to read this blog, but most important – create a qualitative (strive for perfection!) content with discoveries, that would make significant difference. For you and me. In a positive and encouraging way. Something to contemplate about. Preferably out of comfort zone, but still towards good destination.

This blog has an aim to benefit you, me and subsequently around us in the field of personal development and finance. My name is Justinas, I live in London, while i was born and raised in Lithuania. I have a masters degree in Economics and experience working as a financial analyst. This blog is a lot about Finance and Money, since last 13 years were spent studying or working in the field. On the other hand, i am quite curious person, who tries to develop hundred of other skills and never stop growing. As a result, i am burning to explore Self Development cases and reveal formula of happiness. Finally, multiple Ideas are constantly shaping my understanding and behaviour, thus would like to analyze and discuss them here with you as well.

The name Developing Money Ideas could mislead a bit, since it could be read only as a “united” phrase, while the main meaning is three separate topics: personal development, personal finance (or money management) and idea sharing. The logo reflects a bit more of the core idea - blue circle marks the cloudy dreamy development, green square reflects sustainable green finance and money management, while yellow triangle enlightens and points out towards a better future.

Here you will find different ways how to make and save money, which leads to the core of this blog – how to grow your net worth in a sustainable way. We will come back the definition and further discussion about this later. For now, please note, that here you will find slow and legal ways of getting prosperous, as opposed to getting money quick. In the money square we will talk about investing, real estate, entrepreneurship and money management.

Personal or self development includes discussion of various tools, methods, programs and systems how to grow personally. Here you could find inspirations from books, films, online courses, seminars, other blogs or ideas from friends. Developing category entails inevitably environment that surrounds us. Developing could and should positively encourage environment.

What does not go under the money or development umbrella, will go under ideas. The illuminating lamp, the eureka moment, the wish to open the window and look at the colorful and dynamic world. The only criteria – ideas should be beneficial to you or in other words – worth spreading.

I hope you will find this blog interesting. I can promise that Developing Money Ideas (DMI) will be on constant experimentation, innovation and adjustment to be more useful and interesting to read. This will be a play ground to develop a writing skill. I love placing thoughts in my diary, but this is for YOU and not in my mother tongue language English. Lets both learn on the way.

I am thinking to post around 3 times a week. Would be great, if you could provide a constant feedback and discussion. I would love to hear what are you suggestions.

Hope to see you again and hope you will take something useful with you!
